Planning the move

The guide to Planning your move:

1. Embassy Appointment:

Once you have all your paperwork done the visa, we would recommend that make your
embassy appointment as soon as you can, we had an average of a 5 week wait.  wait,Children under 12 don't need to attend the appointment.  Children over 12 must be at the appointment and expect that they will be asked questions.
One another thing to bear in mind is all the interviewing, and form checking etc.. is done through a window at a booth - no privacy at all!!

2. Finding the School - then finding your house:

So your visa has been approved and will be posted with 5 days of approval, so now you need to finds schools in your area.  You are probably thinking that is is strange to be looking for school before your house, but in the US you have to live within the school district, and keep in mind that it you move from that school district you will need to change school.
Here is one of many websites, which will explain school rankings/teacher to pupil ratio/% for Math and English.

Once you decided on the school you can begin to look for houses, there is any easy way to make sure that house you are looking at is in the district you want, simply look up the school district website, and find "my School", once you enter your number number and street name it will automatically tell you the school district for that house.

There are numerous real estate brokers to help you move, Coldwell Bankers would be a reliable and experienced broker all over the US.

3. Bringing the Dog:

If you are travelling from Ireland your dog can travel the same day as Ireland is a Rabies-free country.  You should visit your vet well in advance.  They will be able to update you on all the requirements, for example your dog must have a rabies vaccine before travelling, and you must bring all documentation with you including all vaccines and medications.  We would suggest getting a Passport for you dog as this will have all the information in one place.  We travelled ahead our our dog, as we were in temporary apartments and pets were not allowed.  We had to kennel the dogs, but this meant that the vet arranged the forms, crate for transport and the custom forms.

4. Medical, Dental, & Optician records

It is ESSENTIAL to bring all your health records with you.. and I mean in your hand luggage on the plane with you!.  One of the travellers (shall remain nameless) packed the medical records with the furniture, which meant that we had to wait for copies to be emailed to us from Ireland.  Let's explain.. your child CANNOT start school in the US until the school nurse has all your child's records, they must be from your Doctor of the Health Dept. (your own records are not sufficient).  In addition to supplying these to the school your child (no matter what age) must have a physical by a doctor in your new city/town before they can start school (the teenage children especially enjoyed this... NOT).
Also expect more injections, children must get the Hep B vaccine and the flu shot, there will also be additional vaccines that you might need to get.  If you are a parent who decided again the MMR for example, you are going to struggle to get them into school unless it is done by the doctor in your new town.
For Dentists and Opticians it is not essential to bring records but we would recommend it.  Dentists want to see x-rays that have been taken.  Opticians also like to see previous records
